Three Red Raiders Recognized as All-American Scholars

Sofia Garcia, Amy Taylor and Anna Dong tabbed as All-American Scholars for work in the classroom

LUBBOCK, Texas – A trio of Texas Tech golfers were recognized Monday as All-American Scholars by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA). Junior Sofia Garcia, sophomore Amy Taylor and freshman Anna Dong were included on the prestigious list, giving the Red Raiders the most honorees among their Big 12 Conference counterparts.

The WGCA All-American Scholar Golf teams highlight the outstanding academic and athletic achievements in women’s college golf. Recognized as having one of the highest standards for selection to these teams in college athletics (3.50 GPA), the WGCA All-American Scholar teams continue to demonstrate the high level academic achievements of players across the country. Other criteria includes playing in 50 percent of the college’s regularly-scheduled competitive round during the year as well as high moral character and a good standing at each respective university.

This is the second time both Garcia and Taylor have been honored on the list as Garcia was previously included in 2017, while Taylor received the accolade a year ago. Tech has now boasted three honorees in each of the past four seasons.

The 2018-19 season was a comeback year for Garcia, who returned to form to the tune of a 71.14 scoring average that led the Big 12 and ranked tied for fourth in the country. Garcia earned All-Big 12 honors following the year where she snapped the Tech single-season record for stroke average. She also received her undergraduate degree in psychology following the spring semester.

Taylor completed her sophomore campaign with a 75.2 scoring average after participating in four events this past spring. Dong, meanwhile, finished third on the team with a 74.7 scoring average en route to helping lead the Red Raiders to their ninth NCAA Regional appearance in the past 10 seasons.

All three Red Raiders will be back on campus this fall when Tech opens the 2019-20 slate in September. Tech’s full schedule will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
