Red Raiders fall Saturday at KU, 11-2

LAWRENCE, Kan. – A Davis Rivers double gave Tech Baseball a 2-0 lead, but Kansas scored the games final 11 runs to clinch the series with an 11-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Hoglund Ball Park.

For the second straight night, Texas Tech (29-16, 12-11 Big 12) got off to a lead, as the Red Raiders used the double from Rivers to plate Landon Stripling from second and Drew Woodcox from first. Stripling led off the second with a double while Woodcox walked.

With runners on first and second and two outs in the frame, Gavin Kash smoked a ball into the wind in right center that exited the bat at 106 MPH. The ball looked like it was sailing over the wall in right but instead of clearing the wall the ball landed into the waiting glove of Kansas’ (24-15, 11-9 Big 12) right fielder for the third out of the inning.

KU scratched across its first run of the game in the second when Collier Cranford singled and stole second with one out. Cranford advanced to third on a throwing error by Tech starter Kyle Robinson.

With the runner on third and one out, Kansas’ Lenny Ashby grounded home Cranford to cut the Tech lead to 2-1.

The Jayhawks took the lead for good in the third when a Kodey Shojinaga single and a two-run double Ben Hartl gave the Jayhawks a 4-2 lead.

The teams traded zeros in fourth, before KU closed the fifth with five runs. The big hits came from pinch hitter Cooper Combs and Chase Jans who each singled home a pair.

KU ultimately added two more in the eighth to close out an 11-2 victory.

The Red Raiders will look to salvage the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch from Lawrence has been moved up to Noon.
