Record Setting Day Lifts Men to Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship

Men score most points as a team since Big 12 realignment.

WACO, Texas – The Texas Tech University men’s and women’s track and field teams had a banner day at Clyde Hart Stadium Sunday at the 2018 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, sealing multiple individual titles and the men’s all-around outdoor track and field championship.

The men’s team finished the day with 165 points, the most points scored in the outdoor championship by any team since the last realignment.

“This was so incredible,” said head coach Wes Kittley, who led his men’s team to an indoor and outdoor sweep this season. “This group has a lot of confidence. We feel like we are a little bit better of an outdoor team than we were indoor. From the 4×1, the 400 hurdles, the discus… those 10’s start adding up. This was a lot of fun.”

The women’s team finished sixth overall with 92 points, winning three individual Big 12 Championships in the process. In addition to the heptathlon win Saturday, Paeyton Revell won in the triple jump and Zarriea Willis won in the high jump.

“I’m just so proud of this group,” said Kittley. “Our ladies did well. We thought we could get over 100 points and we got close, but I’m really proud of their effort with a really young team. We have a few of Big 12 Champions out of the group which made it really fun for them.”

Taking home extra hardware was Devine Oduduru, who was named the High Point Scorer of the Meet. Oduduru won championships in the 100m, 200m and helped the 4x100m relay team seal a victory.

“Wasn’t he special? Wow, fabulous in the 200, 100 and in the 4×100,” exclaimed Kittley. “He’s a three-time champion today and the high point scorer. I’m really proud of him.”

The record setting point total for the men topped the team’s previous high since realignment of 160. Several Red Raiders on both sides will enter the West Regionals as national contenders. That event will take place in Sacramento, Calif. From May 24-26.

“I think what’s most important for this program is to keep one foot moving forward, and I think we’ve done that this year so far.”
