Men’s Tennis Unveils 2019-20 Schedule

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech men’s tennis head coach Brett Masi released its 2019-20 schedule, featuring 11 matches against 2019 NCAA Tournament teams.

The Red Raiders have recorded 75 wins and three NCAA Tournament appearances under Masi’s guidance, concluding the 2018-19 campaign with an ITA final team ranking of 27, the highest finish since 2016.

“When I put together this schedule, I wanted to challenge our guys,” Masi said. “With the team we have this year, I think our guys are ready for that challenge. It’s a tough schedule. But I believe that giving that challenging and giving the best matches to the players is going to bring the best out of them in March, April and May.”

Tech’s fall session will begin with a short trip to Midland (Sept. 13-15) before heading to Princeton, New Jersey for the Princeton Ivy Plus (Sept. 20-22) and a return to the Battle in the Bay (Sept. 20-22) in San Francisco.

The Red Raiders are also scheduled to participate in the Bulldog Classic in Athens (Sept. 27-30), the SoCal Invitational (Oct. 31-Nov. 3) and the annual contests at the Saint Francis/ITA All-American Championships (Oct. 5-13) and the ITA Texas Regionals (Oct. 25-28).

The singles and doubles champions from the ITA Texas Regionals in Waco will secure automatic bids to the Oracle/ITA National Fall Championships (Nov. 7-11) in California. Tech has sent representatives to the Fall Championships each year since Masi’s arrival, including a runner-up finish by seniors Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn in 2018 and a doubles title courtesy of Hugo Dojas and Felipe Soares in 2015.

The Red Raiders will return to the McLeod Tennis Center with a doubleheader against UTRGV and Abilene Christian (Jan. 20) before heading to Champaign, Illinois, for the 2020 ITA Kickoff Weekend (Jan. 24-25) to face 2018 NCAA Tournament participants Michigan and either Illinois or Ole Miss. The winner of the Kickoff Weekend tournament will secure their place in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships (Feb. 14-17).

Tech travels back to Dallas to face Texas A&M (Feb. 2) and will then head to Starkville, Mississippi for a pair of matches with Tulane and Mississippi State (Feb. 8-9), who is coming off a NCAA Elite Eight appearance a year ago.

For the 13th time in program history, the Red Raiders will return to the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic (Feb. 21-22) in Montgomery, Alabama. This year’s field includes hosts Alabama, Auburn, Arizona, Fresno, Middle Tennessee State, Ole Miss and Princeton. Tech previously won the event in 2010.

The Red Raiders will next return to Lubbock for a four match home stand, playing host to Tulsa (Feb. 28), a doubleheader against New Mexico and UTSA (March 1) and UCF (March 6), who concluded the 2018-19 year at No. 31 nationally.

Tech will also make a trip to the west coast for a pair of tournaments at the USD Invite (March 14-15) and the Oracle Big 12/Pac 12 Challenge (March 21-22). The non-conference slate will conclude with a matchup against Northwestern (March 25) at home.

“The Oracle Challenge will be huge for our program,” Masi said. “A lot of people say the Oracle is the fifth major professional tournament, and it will be really special for our guys to get out around the pros in the desert and get that exposure, along with competing against quality teams while we’re there.”

Big 12 action will begin with a jaunt to Waco to face Baylor (March 28) before Tech hosts TCU (April 3) and Texas (April 5) on Senior Day. The regular season will be finalized in Oklahoma with matches against Oklahoma (April 9) and Oklahoma State (April 11). The Big 12 Championships will take place in Stillwater from April 17-19.

The Red Raiders will look to build on their third NCAA Tournament appearance in four years under Masi. Tech returns three All-Big 12 honorees from a year ago, including doubles All-Americans Thomson and Wynn.
